The Module for the Analysis of Growth in International Commerce (MAGIC) is an interactive web software developed by the ECLAC Subregional Headquarters in Mexico to analyse the post-trade competitiveness of exports of a trade partner or group of trade partners, in a determined market. Currently, MAGIC contains data about the United States, Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y Panamá), Mexico, and the European Union countries’ markets. The new MAGIC uses trade data from the United States Census Bureau, the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA), and the United Nations International Trade Statistics Database (Comtrade). MAGIC performs bilateral trade profiles, analyses the competitiveness of products and countries and reports on import charges in some countries, and about applied tariffs in the United States market, based on the above data.
The data contained in the new MAGIC are organised according to the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (Harmonized System, HS), at a disaggregated level of 2, 4, 6, and up to 10-digit levels for the United States market. MAGIC contains annual data since 1990 for the European Union, Mexico and the United States; and since 1994 for the Central American countries. MAGIC is a valuable analytical tool for enterprises, governments, academic institutions and anyone interested in international trade. It provides a snapshot of how a product’s market share and markets are evolving, and it also helps to identify main competitors. MAGIC classifies products by competitiveness and behaviour in the market. It compares tariff levels among competitors using tariff data reported by the United States. Furthermore, MAGIC offers other handy indicators and tools, like:
